Carnations — The Flower That Outlasts the Occasion

Carnations spent a decade being unfashionable and have quietly come back, because florists never stopped using them. The ruffled head takes colour better than almost any other flower, the stem is strong enough to hold a shape without wire, and a carnation bouquet is still standing two weeks after a rose bouquet has been thrown away. At Floritta we hand-tie carnations in our London studio both as the main flower — a full bouquet of blush and ivory heads, or a box of pink carnations — and as the texture that holds a mixed arrangement together alongside roses, spray roses and hydrangeas.

Pink, White, Red — and What They Mean

Carnations carry more meaning than their price suggests. Pink carnations are the flower of gratitude and of a mother's love, which is why they turn up every Mother's Day; white stands for remembrance and sincerity; deep red for admiration. We keep pink as the widest part of the range — soft blush hand-tied bouquets, a pink and white mix, and pink carnations arranged in a hat box — because it is the shade people ask for most. Browse by shade in pink flowers and white flowers if the colour matters more than the variety.

Weddings, Anniversaries and Ordinary Tuesdays

The carnation is the traditional flower of the first wedding anniversary, and it has become a serious wedding flower again: a carnation bridal bouquet holds its shape through a long day in a warm room, which is not true of every alternative. We make carnation wedding bouquets and buttonholes to order — see wedding flowers — and build carnations into anniversary and birthday bouquets where the recipient wants something that will still look good the following weekend. For an arrangement that arrives ready to stand on a table, carnations also work well in our flower baskets and flower boxes.

Carnation Delivery Across London and the UK

Order by 10 pm for same-day carnation delivery across London — Chelsea, Kensington, Fulham, Mayfair, Notting Hill, Southwark, Canary Wharf — and across Greater London on the same terms. We also deliver carnations to addresses across the rest of the UK — bouquets travelling outside London are set into florist's foam soaked with water, so they arrive already arranged and still drinking rather than flat-packed through a letterbox. Delivery is free on orders from £99. The studio takes orders daily from 8 am to 10 pm; if you need a specific colour or a particular delivery hour, leave it in the order notes and we will confirm before we cut.

How to Get Three Weeks Out of a Carnation

Carnations are the most forgiving flower we sell, and they still repay a little care. Cut the stem at an angle just above one of the knuckly nodes rather than through it — the node is where the stem is weakest and where it will bend. Strip any leaves that would sit under the waterline, use cool water and the sachet of flower food, and change the water every two or three days. Keep them out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit, which releases ethylene and shortens their life sharply. Two to three weeks in the vase is normal; buds that arrive closed will keep opening for the first week.

Carnation Delivery — Questions We Are Asked

How long do carnations last?

Two to three weeks in a vase, which is longer than almost any other cut flower. Change the water every two or three days and cut the stems above a node, not through one.

Do you deliver carnations the same day in London?

Yes. Order by 10 pm and we deliver the same day across London and Greater London. Later orders go out the next day.

Can you send carnations outside London?

Yes — we deliver across the whole of the UK. Bouquets travelling outside London are set into florist's foam soaked with water, so they arrive arranged and fresh rather than flat-packed as letterbox flowers. Delivery is free on orders from £99.

Can I order pink carnations specifically?

Yes. Pink is the widest part of our carnation range — hand-tied blush bouquets, pink and white mixes, and pink carnations arranged in a box. If you want a particular shade, say so in the order notes.

Are carnations suitable for a wedding?

They are one of the best choices for a long day. Carnations hold their shape in a warm room and survive being carried for hours. We make carnation bridal bouquets, buttonholes and table arrangements to order.

What do carnations symbolise?

Pink means gratitude and a mother's love, white means remembrance and sincerity, red means admiration. The carnation is also the traditional flower of the first wedding anniversary.
