How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Big rounded petals (sepals) with papery texture
Broad, coarsely toothed, glossy leaves in opposite pairs
Thick, woody-ish stem
No noticeable scent

Care

Recut stems under water and split or lightly crush the base to help uptake. Strip any leaves that sit below the waterline, as they rot quickly. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep vase water topped up and consider misting the flower heads. Not very sensitive to ethylene, but wilts fast if it dries out – recut and rehydrate promptly if drooping.
