A Flower That Plays by Its Own Calendar
The first imported peonies of the year reach London around the end of April, and British ones from the end of May — what is in season in April covers what is available before they get here. The two months that belong to the peony are May, when the British crop starts, and June, when it is at its best. The British crop closes in the first week or two of July, and there is nothing British after that until the following May.
Unlike year-round roses, peonies are gloriously seasonal. Our British and European summer window runs from late spring through to mid-August, when peonies are at their most generous — the height of garden-grown abundance. Beyond the summer window, we keep peonies available year-round through carefully sourced European imports. Varieties and availability shift between the seasons, which is why our peony bouquets are priced seasonally rather than at a flat rate — with current pricing always shown before you order. Caring for Your Peonies
Peonies are theatrical but rarely long-lived — most bouquets hold their beauty for around 3 to 7 days, depending on the variety and the season. To get the most from yours, trim the stems at an angle and place them in fresh, cool water out of direct sunlight, refreshing the water every two days — our flower care guide covers the rest. Are peonies in season right now?
The British and European window runs from late spring to mid-August, and that is when peonies are at their most generous. Outside it we work with imports, and what we can make depends on what arrives that week — this collection shows what is genuinely available today rather than everything we build across the year. If peonies are not available on your date, peony roses are the usual answer.
What is the difference between a peony and a peony rose?
A peony is its own flower with its own short season. A peony rose is a garden rose bred to open into the same deep, many-petalled cup — the Juliet varieties are the best known — and it is available all year round. Photographed side by side they are hard to tell apart; in the hand the peony is heavier, more strongly scented and shorter-lived.
How many peonies come in a bouquet?
Our peony bouquets are built by stem count rather than by size label: twenty-five, thirty and forty stems are the usual steps, and the largest is a hundred pink and white peonies. Mixed bouquets carry fewer peonies, with hydrangeas, garden roses or lisianthus around them.
How much does a peony bouquet cost?
Peonies are priced seasonally rather than at a flat rate, because availability and stem quality swing so much across the year. In this collection they run from around £55 for a small mixed box up to just under £500 for the hundred-stem bouquet, with most of the peony-led arrangements in between. How long do peonies last?
Three to seven days as a rule — theatrical rather than long-lived. They arrive in tight bud or just opening, so the recipient gets to watch them unfurl. Trim the stems at an angle, keep them in fresh, cool water out of direct sunlight, and refresh the water every two days.
What do peonies mean?
Romance, prosperity and a happy marriage, which is why they turn up at so many weddings, and they are the traditional flower of a twelfth wedding anniversary. In practice most of ours are sent for birthdays and anniversaries by people who simply love the flower.
Do you deliver peonies the same day in London, and outside it?
Order by 10 PM and we deliver the same day across London and Greater London, seven days a week; orders placed after the cut-off go out the following day. We also send peonies across the rest of the UK, where delivery takes two to three working days — bouquets travelling outside London are set into florist’s foam soaked with water, so they arrive already arranged and still drinking.
