Which Flowers Are Red, Beyond Roses
Roses carry the collection and always will, but a bouquet of red flowers does not have to be a bouquet of red roses. Anthurium gives a lacquered, architectural red that lasts three weeks in a vase and reads as modern rather than romantic. Red chrysanthemums and carnations hold their colour longer than anything else we cut and are what makes a large red arrangement affordable. Amaryllis in winter, tulips in the cool months, gerberas for a brighter and more cheerful red, and skimmia and hypericum berries for the deep red that sits behind the flowers rather than in front of them.
The shade matters more than the flower. Scarlet is the bright, warm red of a classic red rose and it photographs well. Crimson is a cooler red with blue in it. Burgundy is almost brown in low light and is the one people mean when they say they want red but not a Valentine’s red — it works with rust, cream and dried grasses, and it is the strongest autumn palette we build. How Many Red Roses to Send
The number is read as part of the message, whether or not you meant it that way. Three stems is a small, unembarrassed gesture and is what most people actually want when they say they do not want to overdo it. Twelve is the classic and says exactly what everyone thinks it says. Twenty-five to fifty is a milestone — an anniversary, a proposal, a public apology. One hundred and above is a statement piece, and we build up to two hundred stems for one bouquet; those need a day’s notice unless you catch us early in the morning.
What changes the impression more than the count is whether the roses are long-stemmed French roses or standard. A dozen French roses at sixty centimetres looks like more than twenty short ones and lasts longer, because the stem carries more water. If you have a fixed budget, spend it on stem length before you spend it on quantity.

Looking After Red Roses
Red roses bruise more visibly than pale ones — a knock that a white rose hides shows on a red petal as a dark mark within a day. Unwrap them within an hour of arrival, cut two centimetres off each stem at an angle under running water, and strip any leaf that would sit below the water line. The outer petals of a rose are guard petals: they look tired on purpose, they protected the flower in transit, and pulling off the worst two or three makes the whole bouquet look freshly opened. Change the water every two days and keep the vase away from a fruit bowl, because ripening fruit gives off ethylene and roses are sensitive to it. Red starts at £29 for a single anthurium and £31 for three stems of red roses. The middle of the collection sits near £99, and the large rose bouquets — one hundred stems and above — run into the hundreds, up to just under £4,000 for two hundred roses in one hand-tied bouquet. Do you deliver red flowers the same day in London?
Yes. Order by 10 PM and a red bouquet goes out the same day across London and Greater London, seven days a week. If it has to land inside a particular window — before a restaurant booking, before someone leaves the office — put the time in the order notes and we will confirm it before we cut.
Can I send red roses outside London?
Yes, to addresses across the rest of the UK, where delivery takes two to three working days. Roses travel well over that distance; anthurium and amaryllis travel less well, so for a long journey we would steer you to roses, chrysanthemums or a boxed arrangement rather than a loose mixed bouquet.
What is the difference between scarlet, crimson and burgundy?
Scarlet is bright and warm and is the red people picture. Crimson is cooler, with blue in it, and looks more expensive in daylight. Burgundy is very dark, almost brown in low light, and is the shade to choose when you want red without the Valentine’s association. Say which one you want in the order notes and we will cut to it.
Which red flowers last the longest?
Anthurium, comfortably — two to three weeks, sometimes more. Red chrysanthemums and carnations run ten days to a fortnight. Roses give five to eight days if the water is changed; tulips and gerberas are the shortest at four to six. If longevity is the point, an anthurium arrangement or a potted plant beats any cut rose bouquet.
Are red flowers only for romance?
No, though it is the assumption. Red is standard for an anniversary and for a milestone birthday, and deep burgundy with rust and cream is one of the least romantic and most grown-up arrangements we make. Can I get red flowers that are not roses?
Yes, and it is worth asking for. Anthurium, chrysanthemums, carnations, gerberas, tulips and amaryllis all come in strong reds, and a mixed red bouquet costs less than the same size in roses. Write «red, no roses» in the order notes and we will build to it.
How far ahead should I order red roses for Valentine’s Day?
Three to four days, and earlier if you want a specific size or a hundred-plus bouquet. Red roses are the one flower that genuinely runs short in London that week, and the difference between ordering on the 10th and the 13th is visible in what is left to choose from rather than in whether we can deliver.
