How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made up of many small florets
Florets have papery, slightly crinkled petals
Thick, sturdy stem that is soft and prone to splitting
Broad, coarsely toothed, glossy dark green leaves
No noticeable scent

Care

Strip all foliage below the waterline and smash or split the stem end to improve water uptake. Give deep, cool water and keep in a humid environment; mist the heads if they start to wilt. Recut stems under water and dip the cut end briefly in boiling water or alum if they droop. Keep away from ethylene sources and draughts.
