How to recognise it

Large rounded mophead flowerhead made of many small florets
Thick woody stem with sap that can clog water uptake
Broad, serrated, glossy mid-green leaves
Florets feel papery to the touch when mature

Care

Recut stems at an angle under water and remove any leaves below the waterline. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep vases topped up and consider dipping or spraying the flowerhead with water if it wilts. They are not sensitive to ethylene. Keep away from direct heat and draughts.
