How to recognise it

  • Flat, wide-open flat-faced bloom with rounded overlapping petals and sepals
  • Broad lip (labellum) at the centre of the flower, often a different colour pattern
  • Thin, wiry, slightly arching stem without leaves (sold as cut sprays)
  • Waxy, thick-textured petals that feel almost artificial
  • No scent on most cut Phalaenopsis sprays

Care

Keep stems in clean water and recut at an angle before placing in solution. Avoid handling the delicate petals too much as they bruise easily. Keep away from draughts, direct sun and ripening fruit as the flowers are sensitive to ethylene. Mist lightly to keep petals from drying out in warm rooms.

Easy to confuse with

  • Phalaenopsis potted plants – rooted plant, not cut flower
  • Cymbidium – larger, firmer flowers on a thicker stem
