Lisianthus (Eustoma)

Eustoma is the flower most people know by its other name. It looks like a rose, lasts like a carnation, and it is in more of our bouquets than any single-flower collection can show.

Eustoma and Lisianthus — Questions We Are Asked

Is eustoma the same as lisianthus?

Yes — one flower, two names, and the confusion is universal. Eustoma grandiflorum is the botanical name and the one the Dutch trade uses; lisianthus is the older trade name and the one almost everyone searches for in Britain. Some growers still call it prairie gentian. If you have been sent a bouquet described as either, it is this flower.

Why does it look like a rose?

Because the double varieties open into the same layered, cupped shape, on a much finer stem. Florists use it for exactly that: it gives a bouquet the softness of a garden rose without the weight, and it comes in shades roses do not do well — a true lilac, a pale grey-green cream, a clean white with a violet edge. It is also considerably cheaper per stem than a garden rose, which is why a lisianthus bouquet looks more expensive than it is.

How long does lisianthus last?

Ten days to two weeks, and often longer. Each stem carries several buds that open in sequence, so the bouquet keeps renewing itself — take off each flower as it goes over and the ones behind it come through. Change the water every two days and it will outlast almost everything except carnations and chrysanthemums.

How much is a lisianthus bouquet, and can you deliver today?

From £45 up to the larger arrangements, with the middle of the collection near £157. Order by 10 PM for same-day delivery across London and Greater London, seven days a week; two to three working days elsewhere in the UK.
