How to recognise it

Small star-shaped papery bracts surrounding a tight central pincushion flower head
Bracts in white, often with a pale green or pink tinge
Wiry, branching stems with multiple flower heads per stem
Deeply lobed, palmate green leaves lower on the stem
Fine, airy, slightly domed umbel-like flower clusters

Care

Strip any foliage that will sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle before placing in clean water. Astrantia is not notably sensitive to ethylene but benefits from flower food and cool conditions. Keep out of direct sun and draughts, and top up or change water regularly.
