How to recognise it

  • Clusters of small round berries on wiry branching stems
  • Berries range from dark red to deep burgundy, firm and glossy
  • Small narrow leaves along the stem
  • No visible petals – grown for berries, not flowers
  • Stems are thin and woody near the base

Care

Strip any foliage that will sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ripening fruit as it is sensitive to ethylene. Recut every few days to maintain water uptake.

Easy to confuse with

  • Skimmia (similar berry clusters, broader evergreen leaves)
  • Ilex (holly) berries (glossier leaves, often spiny)
