How to recognise it

  • Dense conical clusters of small four-petalled florets
  • Woody, slightly flexible stems that are hard to cut cleanly
  • Heart-shaped, matte green leaves
  • Strong sweet fragrance
  • Florets open gradually from base of the cluster upward

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline as they draw water away from the blooms. Recut stems at an angle and consider splitting or lightly crushing the woody base to improve water uptake. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from direct heat. Lilac is sensitive to wilting, so recut and refresh water every 1–2 days.

Easy to confuse with

  • Syringa vulgaris white – same form, white colour
  • Hydrangea – similar clustered look but rounder, papery florets
