How to recognise it

  • Large umbel of star-shaped white flowers with a dark greenish-black ovary centre
  • Thick, sturdy, succulent green stem
  • Buds open gradually from outside of the umbel inward
  • Strap-like basal leaves, often absent by sale time
  • No strong scent

Care

Recut stems and remove any foliage that sits below the waterline. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ripening fruit as it is sensitive to ethylene. Change water every two to three days and recut to maintain water uptake.

Easy to confuse with

  • Ornithogalum arabicum – similar umbel but single large flower with black centre
  • Ornithogalum thyrsoides – smaller, denser spike form
