How to recognise it

  • Thistle-like flower heads with spiny bracts
  • Stiff upright stems
  • Narrow lance-shaped leaves with spiny edges
  • Bright orange-yellow petals clustered in a rounded head
  • Rough, slightly prickly texture to the touch

Care

Strip lower leaves that would sit in water. Recut stems and place in clean water with flower food. Very ethylene tolerant and long-lasting. Handle with care as leaves and bracts can be sharp or prickly.

Easy to confuse with

  • Centaurea (cornflower) – softer, smaller flower heads, no spines
  • Echinops – rounder, spikier globe-shaped heads
