How Many Roses? What 20, 50, 100 and 101 Roses Mean – and What They Cost in London

Twenty red roses cost £79 at Floritta in London, 50 start at £199 and 100 at £399. Here is what each number means and why prices differ.

We hand-tie rose bouquets in our studio in Southwark (SE1), and two questions sit behind every rose order: what does this number say, and what should it cost? Below are both answers, with our own prices checked on 29 September 2026. Prices change with the season, so the product page always has the current figure.

How much is 20 roses?

Our 20 velvety red roses bouquet costs £79 in its classic size. It is hand-tied in our SE1 studio and delivered the same day anywhere in London if you order by 10pm. That works out at roughly £4 a stem, which is a useful benchmark when you compare florists.

Supermarket bunches come in cheaper per stem. The difference is mostly in head size, stem length and how fresh the roses are when they reach the recipient, so compare photos and stem counts, not just the headline price.

What moves the price of 20 roses

• Rose type. A large-headed standard rose costs more than a spray rose, which carries several smaller blooms on each stem. A bouquet of 20 spray roses and a bouquet of 20 standard roses are very different objects.
• Season. Red roses are in highest demand in the run-up to Valentine's Day, and wholesale prices follow.
• Extras. A hat box, basket or balloons add to the price. So does a larger size of the same design.

What do 20, 50, 100 and 101 roses mean?

There is no official code for rose numbers. What follows are the common readings from flower-giving traditions. They are a nice touch, not a rule: nobody in Britain will count the stems and find a hidden message you didn't intend.

• 1 rose: love at first sight, or one focused gesture.
• 12 roses: the classic dozen, usually read as "be mine".
• 20 roses: sincerity. It says "I mean it" without the scale of a grand gesture.
• 50 roses: love without conditions. Fifty is also the golden wedding anniversary, so 50 roses suit a 50th.
• 99 roses: in Chinese tradition, "forever", because the word for nine sounds like the word for long-lasting.
• 100 roses: complete devotion. It also marks round dates: a 100th birthday, 100 days together.
• 101 roses: "you are my one and only". The extra rose sets one person apart from everyone else.

Odd or even? A note for Eastern European recipients

In Russia, Ukraine and much of Eastern Europe, even numbers of flowers are taken to funerals and graves, so a living person is given an odd number. That is where the 101-rose tradition comes from. Many people only apply the rule to small bouquets, where every stem can be counted, but if the recipient grew up with it, 21 is safer than 20 and 101 safer than 100. If the exact count matters, tell us when you order.

50 roses: why two bouquets can have different prices

Our Luxury bouquet of 50 red roses starts at £199. Rouge Royale is also 50 red roses and starts at £299, with larger sizes at £599 and £999 on the product page. The count is the same. What differs is the rose variety, head size, stem length and how the bouquet is built and wrapped. When you compare 50-rose bouquets between florists, look at the photo and the description of the roses, not only the number.

100 red roses bouquet and 101 roses

Our Luxurious bouquet of 100 red roses starts at £399, again close to £4 a stem. It goes out the same day across London.

A hundred roses in one hand-tied bouquet is heavy and wide. Before you order, think about where it will stand: it needs a large vase or a bucket, and it is easier on everyone if someone is home to take it in rather than leaving it with a neighbour.

For 101 roses, our 100-rose bouquet is the closest ready-made design. If the extra rose matters for the meaning, get in touch before ordering so we can confirm it.

150, 200 and 500 roses: bouquet prices

Very large bouquets are priced individually, because the design changes with the rose type as well as the count:

• 150 roses: Albion Rose Grandeur, 150 stems of blush spray roses in one statement bouquet, is £985. Each spray rose stem carries several small heads, so it looks fuller than 150 single roses would.
• 200 roses: Grande Passion, 200 velvety red roses with baby's breath, is currently £859.
• 500 roses: we don't have a ready-made 500-rose design. Our largest is 400 red roses with 65 red heart balloons at £1,999, in our flowers over £500 collection. For 500 roses, contact us a few days ahead: that many matching stems have to be sourced as one batch.

How to choose the number

• Birthday or early dating: 12 to 20 roses. Generous without feeling like a proposal.
• Anniversary: one rose for each year works well up to about 20. After that, 50 or 100 carry the same message with less counting.
• Proposal or a big apology: 50, 100 or 101. This is where the size itself is the message.
• Budget first: for standard red roses at our prices, budget about £4 a stem, then choose the count that fits.
