How to recognise it

Masses of tiny five-petalled flowers on wiry, much-branched stems
Flowers white or pale, small buds that open gradually
Thin, sparse narrow grey-green leaves along the stem
Airy, cloud-like overall form
Mild, slightly sweet scent

Care

Strip any foliage that will sit below the waterline and recut stems before placing in water. Use clean water with flower food, as gypsophila is sensitive to bacterial blockage. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources, as this causes premature shedding of the small flowers. Keep cool and out of direct sun or draughts to prolong life.
