How to recognise Santander lily, when it is in season and how to keep it fresh.

How to recognise it

Large oriental lily buds, teardrop-shaped, on sturdy upright stems
Broad, glossy, deep green lance-shaped leaves along the stem
Strong, sweet lily fragrance once open
Prominent stamens with heavy pollen, typically removed in trade
Several buds per stem opening in succession

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle before placing in fresh water. Remove the pollen-bearing anthers as soon as flowers open to prevent staining and prolong the bloom. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources, and recut every few days with a change of water.
