How to recognise it

Tightly layered, tissue-paper-like petals forming a rounded bloom
Buds resemble small cabbages before opening
Thin, hairy, wiry stems
Deeply lobed, fern-like foliage near the base
No noticeable scent

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle. Use clean, cool water and keep away from direct heat and draughts. Ranunculus are sensitive to ethylene, so keep away from fruit and ripening produce. Keep cool to prolong life, as they are heat-sensitive and open quickly in warm rooms.
