How to recognise it

Single large bloom per stem (standard, not spray type)
Fringed petal edges typical of dianthus
Grey-green narrow linear leaves in opposite pairs
Swollen jointed nodes along the stem
Clove-like scent typical of the genus

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Use clean buckets and flower food; dianthus is sensitive to ethylene so keep away from ripening fruit and old flowers. Keep water clean and change regularly, recutting every few days.
