How to recognise it

  • Single large bloom per stem (standard, not spray type)
  • Fringed, serrated petal edges typical of carnations
  • Thick, jointed (nodal) stem with waxy grey-green foliage
  • Clove-like scent typical of Dianthus
  • Calyx is tubular and ribbed at base of flower

Care

Strip foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle above a node. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ripening fruit as carnations are sensitive to ethylene. Recut every few days and keep cool to extend life.

Easy to confuse with

  • Dianthus spray carnations – multiple smaller blooms per stem
  • Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) – clustered small flowers, different habit
