How to recognise it

  • Standard (single large head) carnation type, not spray
  • Thick swollen leaf nodes on sturdy stem
  • Narrow grass-like grey-green leaves growing in opposite pairs
  • Ruffled, fringed petal edges typical of carnations
  • Clove-like scent

Care

Strip leaves that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle. Use clean water with flower food; carnations are not very sensitive to ethylene but keep away from ripening fruit and old flowers. Keep in a cool room, out of direct sun and draughts.

Easy to confuse with

  • Dianthus spray carnations – multiple smaller blooms per stem
  • Dianthus caryophyllus other standard cultivars – differ mainly in colour
