How to recognise it

Standard (disbudded) single large bloom per stem, not spray type
Serrated, fringed petal edges typical of carnations
Thick swollen nodes on a sturdy, upright stem
Narrow, grass-like grey-green leaves growing in pairs along the stem
Clove-like scent typical of carnations

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems at an angle and place in clean water with flower food. Carnations are relatively tolerant of ethylene compared to other flowers but keep away from ripening fruit and strong ethylene sources. Keep in cool conditions out of direct sun and draughts.
