How to recognise it

Single large flower per stem (standard, not spray type)
Serrated petal edges typical of carnations
Thick swollen leaf nodes on the stem
Narrow greyish-green linear leaves
Clove-like scent typical of the genus

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle before placing in clean water. Carnations are not very sensitive to ethylene but still benefit from flower food. Keep away from ripening fruit and direct heat.
