How to recognise it

  • Single large bloom per stem (standard, not spray)
  • Fringed petal edges typical of Dianthus
  • Thick jointed, swollen nodes on stem
  • Narrow grass-like grey-green leaves
  • Clove-like scent typical of carnations

Care

Strip foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Use clean buckets and flower food, as carnations are sensitive to bacteria. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources, as carnations are ethylene-sensitive. Store and transport cool.

Easy to confuse with

  • Dianthus caryophyllus other standard cultivars – differ mainly in colour and petal pattern
