How to recognise it

Single large bloom per stem (standard, not spray)
Fringed, serrated petal edges typical of dianthus
Grey-green, narrow, waxy leaves on jointed stem
Swollen nodes along the stem
Clove-like scent typical of the genus

Care

Strip foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ripening fruit as dianthus is sensitive to ethylene. Recut every few days and keep the water fresh.
