How to recognise it

Standard (single large bloom per stem) carnation type
Thick swollen nodes on a sturdy upright stem
Fringed, serrated petal edges typical of Dianthus
Narrow grass-like grey-green leaves growing in pairs
Clove-like scent

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle above a node. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ripening fruit as carnations are sensitive to ethylene. Recut every few days and change the water to extend freshness.
