How to recognise it

Single large standard bloom per stem, not spray type
Serrated petal edges typical of carnation
Thick jointed (nodal) stem, glaucous blue-green foliage
Clove-like carnation scent
Calyx tubular, holding petals tightly at base

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle. Keep water clean and use flower food; carnations are sensitive to ethylene, so keep away from ripening fruit and old flowers. Store and transport cool to extend life.
