How to recognise it

  • Wiry, arching stem with flowers along one side
  • Double flowers forming a ruffled, layered bloom
  • Sword-shaped, narrow leaves (fan-like at base)
  • Buds open sequentially from the bottom of the spike
  • Strong, sweet freesia scent

Care

Recut stems at an angle and remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ethylene sources such as ripening fruit. Keep in a cool spot out of direct sun and draughts, and change the water every two days.

Easy to confuse with

  • Single-flowered freesia varieties – fewer petals, simpler open bloom
  • Gladiolus – similar spike habit but much larger flowers and stem
