How to recognise it

  • Round, grey-blue, coin-shaped juvenile leaves in opposite pairs
  • Rounded stem cross-section with woody texture
  • Strong aromatic eucalyptus scent when crushed
  • Flexible, slightly pendulous stems
  • Powdery bloom (wax coating) on leaf surface

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline and recut stem ends before placing in water. Use clean buckets with fresh water and keep away from ripening fruit as it is sensitive to ethylene. Eucalyptus is thirsty foliage, so check and top up water levels regularly.

Easy to confuse with

  • Eucalyptus cinerea – smaller, more silvery leaves
  • Eucalyptus parvifolia – narrower leaf shape
