How to recognise it

Flat, glossy dark green 'leaves' are actually flattened stems (cladodes)
Leaves oval to lance-shaped, arranged alternately along arching stems
Stems woody and firm at the base, flexible towards the tip
No visible flowers or true leaves, tiny bumps may appear mid-leaf
Leathery texture, holds shape well without wilting quickly

Care

Strip any foliage that will sit below the waterline and recut stems before placing in water. Use clean buckets with fresh water and change it every few days to prevent bacterial build-up. Ruscus is not sensitive to ethylene and tolerates rough handling well. Keep out of direct sun and heat to extend freshness.
