How to recognise it

  • Double, ruffled rose-like blooms with many thin petal layers
  • Several buds and open flowers per branching stem
  • Smooth, slightly waxy blue-green oval leaves in opposite pairs
  • Buds spiral-shaped before opening, tissue-paper texture when open
  • Sturdy upright stem, no thorns

Care

Recut stems at an angle under water and remove any foliage that sits below the waterline. Use fresh flower food and change the water every two days as eustoma is sensitive to bacterial contamination. Keep away from direct sun and heat sources, and avoid draughts. It is not notably ethylene-sensitive but keep away from ripening fruit as a precaution.

Easy to confuse with

  • Double garden rose – eustoma has thinner, more papery petals and no thorns
  • Ranunculus – smaller bloom size and rounder petal shape
