How to recognise Genova dahlia, when it is in season and how to keep it fresh.

Season: British field season, July to October J F M A M J J A S O N D
Vase life: 5–7 days
Storage: Store in the cooler at around 4–6°C if space allows; dahlias tolerate cool storage but can be kept at cool room temperature for short periods.
Cats and dogs: Toxic – keep out of reach of cats and dogs

How to recognise it

Ball-type dahlia with tightly packed, spherical bloom
petals densely spiralled and rolled (quilled) toward the centre
sturdy straight stem with few leaves below the bloom
dark green, slightly glossy pinnate foliage
no scent

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Use clean water with flower food and keep away from ethylene sources such as ripening fruit. Dahlias are thirsty, so check and top up water levels daily. Keep out of direct sun and draughts to extend vase life.
