How to recognise it

Tightly packed, spherical ball-shaped bloom with densely spiralled petals
Petals curve inward giving a honeycomb-like pattern when viewed closely
Sturdy, hollow, slightly ridged green stem
Mid-green, toothed, paired leaves lower down the stem
No scent

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems at an angle and place in clean, cool water – dahlias drink heavily so check levels daily. They are sensitive to bacteria, so use a flower food and change the water every two days. Keep away from direct heat and draughts; dahlias are not particularly ethylene-sensitive but benefit from cool conditions.
