How to recognise it

Small, perfectly spherical pompon-form bloom
Tightly quilled, rolled petals packed from edge to centre
Sturdy, straight stem with dark green, divided foliage
Round buds that open evenly, no visible central disc
No scent

Care

Recut stems and remove lower foliage that would sit in water. Dahlias are thirsty and drink heavily, so top up water levels often and change water regularly to avoid bacterial build-up. Keep away from direct heat and draughts; they are not notably ethylene-sensitive but benefit from cool conditions. Avoid overcrowding stems as petals bruise easily.

Pompon-form Chrysanthemum – similar round shape but different petal texture and foliage
Craspedia (billy balls) – round but single-colour ball without quilled petals
