How to recognise it
- Decorative-type dahlia with fully double bloom and flat, broad petals
- Petals layered densely with no visible centre disc when open
- Sturdy, hollow, slightly ridged stem
- Dark green, ovate leaflets in opposite pairs
- No noticeable scent
Care
Recut stems under water and remove any foliage that sits below the waterline. Dahlias drink heavily, so keep water levels topped up and change it every two days. They are sensitive to ethylene, so keep away from fruit and ripening produce. Use clean buckets and flower food to reduce bacterial blockage of the hollow stem.
Easy to confuse with
- Other decorative dahlia cultivars – differ mainly in colour and petal arrangement
- Peony – similar full bloom form but different leaf shape and no hollow stem
