How to recognise it

Small daisy-like flower head, 5–6 cm across
Single ring of petals around a dark or green centre disc
Straight hairy stem, no foliage on stem
Rosette of basal leaves only at the base (usually removed for sale)
Sold in bunches with hollow-pack stem support

Care

Recut stems under water and remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Use shallow, clean water as stems can rot easily, and change water frequently. Gerbera is sensitive to bacteria, so clean buckets and flower food are important. Keep away from direct heat and draughts.
