How to recognise it
- Leaves densely covered in short purple-violet hairs giving a velvety sheen
- Leaf shape ovate with toothed edges
- Trailing or semi-upright soft stems, also purple-tinted
- Small orange-yellow flower heads with an unpleasant smell if open
- Compact bushy growth habit in a pot
Care
Keep the compost lightly moist, never waterlogged, and provide bright indirect light to preserve the purple colour. Pinch out flower buds as they smell unpleasant and pinch tips to keep the plant bushy. Avoid cold draughts and keep away from direct hot sun which can scorch the leaves.
Easy to confuse with
- Tradescantia pallida – purple foliage but smooth, not hairy
