How to recognise it

  • Large, glossy heart-shaped leaves with natural splits and holes (fenestrations) in mature plants
  • Thick, ridged green stem
  • Aerial roots emerging from stem nodes
  • Young leaves lack holes, developing fenestrations as the plant matures
  • Leathery leaf texture

Care

Keep as a house plant in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct midday sun. Water when the top of the soil feels dry and allow excess water to drain away. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust. Provide a moss pole or support for aerial roots and climbing growth as the plant matures.

Easy to confuse with

  • Philodendron (smaller, undivided leaves)
  • Monstera adansonii (smaller leaves, more holes than splits)
