How to recognise it
- Oval leaves with peacock-like dark green patterning above
- Leaf underside flushed purple-red
- Thin leaf stalks held upright from a central rosette
- Leaves fold upward at night
- No visible flower, grown for foliage
Care
Keep out of direct sun and draughts, in a warm spot with high humidity. Water with soft, room-temperature water keeping compost moist but not waterlogged, and mist the leaves regularly. Wipe dust off leaves with a damp cloth rather than leaf shine products.
Easy to confuse with
- Calathea orbifolia – larger rounder silvery-striped leaves
- Maranta leuconeura – similar night-folding leaves but different pattern
