How to recognise it

  • Trailing stems with lance-shaped leaves
  • Leaves striped cream, pink and green (variegated)
  • Slightly fleshy, jointed stems that root easily at nodes
  • Compact low-growing or trailing habit, often in hanging pots

Care

Keep soil lightly moist but not waterlogged; avoid overwatering which causes rot. Place in bright, indirect light to keep variegation strong. Pinch back leggy stems to encourage bushiness. Avoid cold draughts and direct hot sun which can scorch leaves.

Easy to confuse with

  • Tradescantia zebrina – silver-striped leaves with purple underside
  • Callisia repens – smaller rounder leaves, less variegation
