How to recognise it

  • Large paddle-shaped banana-like leaves on long upright stems
  • Grey-green leaf blades with a visible central rib
  • Grows in clumping, multi-stemmed fashion from the base
  • Mature plants may show a woody, trunk-like stem

Care

Keep as a house plant in bright, indirect light and water moderately, letting the compost dry slightly between waterings. Wipe dust off the large leaves to keep them glossy and allow good light absorption. Avoid cold draughts and keep away from direct heat sources.

Easy to confuse with

  • Strelitzia reginae - smaller leaves and produces the orange bird-of-paradise flower
  • Banana plant (Musa) - thinner, more fragile leaves that tear easily
