How to recognise it

  • Heart-shaped glossy spathe with a central spadix
  • Thick waxy leaves rising from soil on long petioles
  • Spathe surface smooth and lacquer-like to the touch
  • Grown as a potted house plant, not a cut stem
  • New growth emerges rolled before unfurling

Care

Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged, and let the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Avoid cold draughts and direct hot sun; bright indirect light suits it best. Wipe the leaves and spathes with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy. Do not mist excessively as this can encourage fungal spotting.

Easy to confuse with

  • Other Anthurium andreanum cultivars – differ mainly in spathe colour
  • Anthurium cut flowers – sold as stems, not potted
