How to recognise it
- Large glossy leaves with natural splits (fenestrations) once mature
- Irregular white/cream variegation patches on leaves, no two leaves alike
- Thick woody climbing stem with visible aerial roots
- Leathery leaf texture, leaves on long petioles
Care
Keep soil lightly moist but let the top layer dry between waterings; avoid waterlogging. Wipe leaves clean with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep variegation visible. Provide bright, indirect light to preserve white patches; low light causes reversion to plain green. Not sensitive to ethylene.
Easy to confuse with
- Monstera deliciosa (plain green) – lacks variegation
- Monstera adansonii – smaller leaves with holes rather than deep splits
- Epipremnum aureum (Pothos) – smaller, thinner leaves, no splits
