How to recognise it

Large daisy-like flower head with bright yellow petals around a central dark disc
Thick, sturdy, hairy stem
Broad, rough-textured, heart-shaped leaves
Flower head typically faces one direction
No noticeable fragrance

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems at an angle before placing in fresh water. Sunflowers are heavy drinkers, so check and top up water levels daily. They are not particularly ethylene-sensitive but benefit from clean, cool water and a floral preservative.
