How to recognise it

Large mophead flower head made of many small florets
Florets have 4 overlapping papery petals
Thick, sturdy stem that is often woody at the base
Broad, serrated, glossy mid-green leaves in opposite pairs
Flower head feels papery and slightly stiff to the touch

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline as hydrangeas drink mainly through the head and stem. Recut stems at an angle under water and consider splitting or crushing the stem base to aid water uptake. Keep in deep, cool water and mist the flower heads occasionally to prevent wilting. Avoid placing near ethylene sources and draughts.
