How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Thick woody stem with large serrated oval leaves
Papery textured petals (bracts)
Thick, sometimes hollow stem that wilts easily if dry

Care

Recut stems at an angle under water and consider smashing or slitting the stem ends to aid water uptake. Keep in deep, cool water and mist the heads regularly as hydrangeas drink through both stem and petals. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Keep away from direct heat and draughts, which cause wilting.
