How to recognise it

Large mophead bloom made of many small florets
Florets have four to five papery bracts, not true petals
Thick woody stem with large serrated oval leaves
Leaves broad and glossy with visible veining
Colour can shift with soil pH and may not match cultivar name exactly

Care

Strip leaves that would sit below the waterline, as they wilt the stem quickly. Recut stems at an angle and consider smashing or splitting the woody base to help water uptake. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep water levels topped up and mist the heads to prevent wilting. Keep away from direct heat and draughts.
