How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made up of many small petal-like florets
Thick woody stem that can be rigid and slightly brittle
Broad serrated oval leaves, glossy and often removed below the head
Flower head feels papery-textured when more mature
No strong scent

Care

Strip all foliage below the waterline as leaves wilt quickly and draw water away from the head. Recut stems at an angle under water and consider splitting or crushing the stem base to improve uptake. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep water levels topped up and mist the heads if they start to droop. They are not sensitive to ethylene, but benefit from cool conditions and a floral preservative.
