How to recognise it

Large mophead or lacecap flower cluster made of many small florets
Thick, sturdy woody stem
Broad, glossy, serrated oval leaves in pairs
Flower head feels papery when mature
Stems often woody at base and may ooze when cut

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems at an angle under water, and consider smashing or splitting the woody stem base to improve water uptake. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so check and top up water levels daily. Keep away from direct heat and draughts; ethylene sensitivity is low but fluctuating water uptake causes wilting.
