How to recognise it

Large rounded mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Woody, slightly hairy stem
Broad, coarsely toothed oval leaves with visible veining
Papery texture to individual florets
Thick stem base that can split when cut

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline and re-cut the stem at an angle, splitting or hammering the woody base to help water uptake. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep them in deep, cool water and top up often. Mist the blooms lightly and avoid placing near heat or draughts; they are sensitive to wilting and benefit from a brief full-head dunk in water if they droop.
