How to recognise it

Large rounded mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Big, coarse, serrated oval leaves on sturdy stem
Woody, slightly hairy stem that can split at the base
Papery texture to individual florets when fully open

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline and smash or cut the stem base vertically to improve water uptake. Recut stems under water and give deep, cool water with flower food. Hydrangeas are thirsty and wilt quickly if dry, so mist the heads and keep in a cool spot away from direct sun and draughts.
